This is the first time I've ever written an Amazon review for any item that i've bought and having read many memoirs and books on the second world war, I can honestly say this has been one of the most extraordinary books I've ever read.. One of the most incredible stories of survival, I can honestly now say with hand on heart that even as a christian I would find it very difficult to forgive the Japanese that did this... What is even more extraordinary is the behaviour of the Japanese government, this book should be forced onto there school children for them to fully appreciate what their forefathers did, I don't really care that this was somehow their emporers will, but this should never be allowed to happen again... Emotions can be a difficult thing to comprehend but I will remember this book for a long time to come and rightly so...

This is an unforgettable book and an incredible story of survival in the most extreme conditions. The Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759- 1796), who was passionate about freedom and respect for humankind, wrote, "Man's Inhumanity to Man, makes countless thousands mourn."
This sums up Alistair Urquhart's book and the treatment of our soldiers by the Japanese in a nutshell. It also sums up the countless horrors of war.
My wife and I went to Inverness to a book review and to listen to Alistair Urquart in person. We were both moved by the experience. His story needs to be told and we need to remember all the forgotton soldiers of the war, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
I rate this book highly. It should be read by all...lest we forget!

This is a cover to cover read and I never realised yet how badly our troops were treated not only by the Japanese, but also the MOD when they returned.
Absolutely recommend this book and should be part of the schools reading list, so we never forget the contribution these people made to every generation that follows.
A book that needs to be read August 12, 2010

I have nothing but total love and respect for those brave souls that died in the Far East in WWII my great Uncle Hugh included in this. This powerful memoir conveys the desperation, fear and survival instincts that the author had to employ just to survive the terrible atrocities he saw. The book is powerful absorbing and a must read for future generations to understand the sacrifices that were made in the name of our freedom! And shame on the UK govt for taking so long to show these brave men the gratitude they so strongly deserve!

I was absolutely shocked by the sheer cruelty that our soldiers had to endure from the Japanese during the war. I really admire this very brave mans account of what he was forced to suffer at their hands, and how he coped afterwards. The story is told with great courage and dignity. The book is well worth reading, although some of the facts might haunt your dreams for a while.
