Yet another splendid un-put-downable read from Sarah Waters. Very different from the Victorian settings for the earlier works but superb nonetheless. I need to read it again in order to drink in all the tiny details and check that I didn't miss anything. Highly recommended.
waters August 17, 2010 deedeediddlidee great if you like slow ghost stories.the poverty stricken landed gentry v the poverty stricken peasantry.
Excellent book, ending was a let-down! August 17, 2010 J. A. Wolff (London) Took this book on holiday with me after purchasing it a few months ago and not getting round to reading it. My holiday home was a lonely 5 bedroom house in Ireland that was quiet and remote at night, therefore i got halfway through the book and stopped reading because i was scaring myself to death. Back to busy London and i got down to work to finish the book it became very spooky and i had trouble sleeping, fast track to a major let-down ending and im so confused that im actually quite cross i spent all my spare time reading. In short its an excellent read upto the last few pages, Sarah Waters is an amazing author with a talent for descriptive narrative and period writing however i feel she has tried to be a bit too clever with the ending and it doesnt work, im thinking The Thirteenth Tale which had a satisfying ending.
