superb at what they do January 3, 2009 J. Dimmick (Oxford, United Kingdom) Five stars for sound quality and build quality at this price point, and as I'm not a bells-and-whistles person that means five stars overall from me. These are the first dedicated computer speakers I've been able to live with, and I've been using them for just over a year now, on three different desktop and laptop systems without any stability or compatibility problems -- except one smallish one which I'll come back to.
The sound first: it has plenty of warmth and a good deal of bass for small speakers, but the clarity is good enough for them to be quite happy reproducing speech as well as music (e.g. on the BBC's iPlayer service). They can do a more than creditable job at giving a sense of the scale of a symphony orchestra without masking too much mid-range and treble detail, and with smaller groups and soloists are better still. You can actually enjoy music on them, rather than enjoy in your mind what the music would sound like on decent equipment (always my previous experience with a good half dozen sets of PC speakers, including most recently the well-received but underwhelming Creative GigaWorks T20).
Vista has drivers which can run them as speakers quite happily without installing Logitech's own software. I prefer this as I'm not interested in the extra gadgets on the LCD panel and don't much like having lots of background processes running.
That compatibility issue I mentioned, and it won't bother many people: because they're USB speakers, they don't hook up to my PC's soundcard. That means I can't use them with MIDI synths, only with audio. There *is* a 3.5mm connector for audio line input, but my experiments with it haven't been awfully successful - it seems to distort at very modest volumes and the sound quality is much poorer, so presumably some extra amplification would be needed. If this bothers you, look elsewhere, but I'm not going to dock them a star -- it's as all-round audio speakers for desktops or laptops that these excel.
Crystal Clear and punchy - Best in Class December 23, 2008 Barty1958 (Dublin, Ireland) I have these over a year now and they are one of the best things I ever bought. They are chunky looking but the sound is awesome. They have the perfect range between Bass/Midrange and highs. I am currently listening to Tripswitch " Circuit Breaker " , beautiful Ambient and the sound is Bliss. They complement Windows Media/ Winamp with a LCD Display of the track info. These are more for Music Lovers than Gamers. Highly Recommended.
fantastic sound quality, marred by speakers developing fault. September 28, 2008 Mr. D. Kansara (U>K) I brought these speakers year from D.S.G Group towards the end of last year. After four months of working fine, i suddenly found the sound quality had diminished rapidly. I have contacted 'logitech support' who felt i should test on a different computer which have done only to find no change. I suppose i will have to exchange for something else i guess, from the shop i brought it from.
good speakers September 4, 2008 S. Ward (UK) These were bought to replace the 'free' advent speakers that came with our home PC four years ago. They look smart and sound very good. Obviously they are not all-out 'hi-fi' speakers but they have a nice balanced sound and for the purposes of having music playing while doing somethng else they are pretty good. If you really want to listen to the music buy a decent CD player, amp and big speakers. The display is a little gimicky, but looks nice. The touch controls can be a bit fiddly and encourage finger prints on the shiny black surface (they thoughtfully provide a cloth), but we tend to use the controls on the (Logitech) keyboard anyway which work in parallel. Setting them up simply involved plugging them in to the USB port. We had no trouble with USB power as reported by a previous buyer. In summary, a good value upgrade from our real cheapies which I would recommend.
Don't deliver on what they promise July 3, 2008 Kaye L. Elling (Leeds, UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Like many, I trusted the Logitech brand and was enticed by the cool touch-sensitive interface of these speakers. They promised some seriously cool features in a sleek package. However, the longer I've had them, the more I wish I'd saved myself the money and bought an unknown brand - it really would have been a better investment.
Don't get me wrong, it's not the sound quality that's an issue, it's the clunky and often defective usability of the Z10 speakers that's the problem.
- These are USB speakers, and unless you have some seriously powered USB ports, they will crash within an hour and require an entire system reboot. This has happnened to me countless times, despite my having a killer PC case and good power supply.
- In addition, USB connectivity means that it's difficult to switch between the speakers and a head-set & mike without much faffing with cables at the back of your PC.
- The touch sensitivity is so high that even brushing the front of the speaker with the mouse cable will trigger the on/off button or your volume setting. If your desk space is even remotely limited, this will become a problem very quickly.
- On the flipside, if you actually want to change the volume, the response time is painfully slow and touch commands can stack up over several seconds, leaving the commands continuing to excute long after you've stopped giving them. This is a particular problem if the speakers have stealthily turned themselves up to maximum (see the earlier point about mouse cables) and you're suddenly deafening the neighbours at 3 a.m.
- A minor issue, but they're also an incredible dust magnet. Something to do with the touch-technology means that they'll fuzz up within an afternoon (even in relatively clean rooms) and you'll find yourself delicately cleaning them every day with the cloth provided, which of course alters your volume settings *again*.
Considering the price, I would advise against a purchase. The idea was great, but the execution was poor. My next PC speakers are going to be plain and simple things, with simple controls and a nice safe connection to my sound card, thanks.
