The only remotely justifiable criticism of the DC16 is its short battery life. It is true that it only lasts about 3 minutes on the first charge, but after it has run down and recharged a few times, this goes up to about 6 or 7 minutes. This may not sound much, but it does compare well with other handheld cleaners. This is because it works so much better. Having owned several other rechargable vacuums in the past, I have found that the Dyson's suction power is so much greater that it simply doesn't need as long a charge to do a better job. As well as doing its job more quicky than other cleaners, it picks things up that none of the others I have used can manage at all. Other vacuums may manage 10 minutes or more on a charge, but they still won't have done as a good a job in that time. And the Dyson takes at most half as long to fully recharge than others. This machine outclasses all competition, but if you are expecting a vacuum that will work like a mains operated one, then buy a mains operated one!

The difference is in the design with this Dyson. You just have to see the detail. It's vastly superior to any other handheld. In fact, from Dyson's own website, I can buy any part, and make a whole new machine myself and without having to pay for costly repairs. What do you do with your old handheld when it breaks - throw it away and buy another one? Well done Mr. Dyson. It's a top product.
If you want a good price, like I did, then price watch a few places and wait for offers and deals to come by.
This is a machine for people who continuously clean all the time, as opposed to people who spend one single long period doing a more complete cleaning chore. The trigger is good too. That means the machine is only on for a few few seconds at a time when you are squeezing the trigger. Six minutes of charge could last longer. Think about other cleaners that get switched on and left on until the cleaning job is done.
Mr Dyson always betters himself, so he can't have five stars :-P

I have had a DC-16 for at least a year and it is the most effective hand held vacuum cleaner I have come across. Recommended.

Reliable (12 to 18 months on and it still looks and works like new)

Retro looks may not suit everyone

this is an excellent piece of kit, which some of the other reviews nearly put me off buying. It is very powerful and has more than enough time to vacuum two cars and then some.

This product looks good and is fun. Its a little bit heavy but still easy to use and comes with a few useful attachments. Ideal for doing the car. It can be wall mounted for charging and is great for doing those small cleaning jobs where you can't be bothered to get out the upright cleaner!
