5 out of 5 stars Just brilliant!   January 8, 2009

We were getting through so much bread I decided to investigate a machine. Having read these reviews I decided to try a Panasonic. my friend then said she had one I could have - the SD253 model. I gave it a try and we are hooked! It's brilliant and easy. Not one bad loaf yet. Even my husband sticks a loaf on now.
So if you are still sceptical pick up the older SD253 model (second hand bargains on ebay)- you won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Total Failure   December 29, 2008

Bought this machine as replacement to earlier Panasonic which failed after several years of daily use. This machine is a complete failure however. Has not worked at all since purchased. Returned to Panasonic (x2)and 'repaired under guarantee' Now works but only (sort of) in Rapid bake programme. Whilst my first machine was excellent be aware that if it goes wrong even straight out of the box not worth incuring transport cost in an effort to get it put right.

1 out of 5 stars Even I can makw great bread   December 28, 2008

Twice I have got the mix wrong and realised my mistake after starting the cycle. Other than that it keeps churning out really nice bread. I bought this model because I was put off by the adverse reviews of the automatic dispenser. I wish now I had gone for the automated version and 'floured' the rasins, etc. With the standard model you have to wait 45 minutes and put the raisins in but it is 20bps cheaper.

Other reviews complain about the loose paddle wheel which is easily explained. Dough gets into the paddle and spindle and is then baked in. You need quite a bit of play in the spindle to wiggle it in order to get it out for cleaning. If it were tighter it just would not budge.

Easy to use with an excellent range of breads to get you going, easy to clean and a pleasure to use.

Something else to purchase is a pair of oven gloves (five fingered are best as you have to grip and shake the non-stick tin). Amazon's Kelvar gloves work a treat.

5 out of 5 stars More Than Impressed + Great Recipe   December 6, 2008

I have had a Pani 254 for 6 months now and I too am more than impressed with this machine. I have experimented with a number of Brown Bread recipes and settled on a tasty and healthy Malted/Seeded Brown made with 50% beer. The combination of sweet malt and hoppy beer is fantastic:

Malted/Seeded Beer Bread XL Size

500 gm Malted Grain Bread Flour
50 gm Seed mix (Sunflower/Linseed/Poppy etc)
350 gm 50% warm water/50% beer (Guinness is excellent)
1 tablespoon Malt Extract (in place of sugar) - dissolved in the warm water
2 tablespoons fast acting Yeast
1 tablespoon salt
20 gm Butter, or Toasted Sesame Oil, or Walnut Oil
of 200mg Vitamin C tablet (also dissolved in warm water), to help rising

Use Standard Bake or Whole Wheat setting.

If you are adventurous you might also like to try a Sourdough Loaf in the Pani. There is a dried Sourdough culture available on EBay, along with a special resisting method to activate the culture before you set the machine going.

All highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Machine for the Money   December 4, 2008

I bought one of these for my wife last Christmas and what a great gift it's turned out to be. She loves using it and we both love the results! In fact, until somebody really clever invents a quality domestic breadmaker that doesn't bake the paddle into the middle of the loaf, it's hard to point to anything that could be improved significantly here. Oh, and do not forget the pizza dough programme - rolled thinly with a smear of tomato, a little fresh mozarrella, basil and ham and then 18 mins at 220C..........mmmmm.
