One of the simplest - and one of the best June 15, 2001 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Runrig, as a band, have progressed through a career of nigh on 25 years through traditional Gaelic melodies, storming political folk-rock, and heavier mood pieces with lush keyboard sounds and thoroughly modern production. "Searchlight" catches them at the midpoint in their journey. Simplicity is the hallmark of this album (much more so than its rabble-rousing predecessor, "The Cutter and the Clan"), with deeply reflective, spiritual elements in songs such as "Every River" and "Precious Years". The band's social and political consciousness is clear in songs such as "Eirinn" and "Smalltown", but not worn so blatantly on their sleeves as in "The Cutter...". There are hints too - notably the lovely keyboard in the outstanding "Only the Brave" - of the lush sound which would grow to be the "Big Wheel" album, but the charm of this album lies in its simple production and graceful, enduringly memorable melodies. Of all Runrig albums, this is the one you'll sing along to most.

Released in 1989, this is one of Runrig's best early albums. All the songs on this album have become firm favourites with Runrig fans over the years. Donny Munro has a very powerful voice and these songs really bring out the best in him. A must for your collection.
