Obscured by Success June 30, 2008 Dr. Simon Blease (Monmouth) You know, Pink Floyd really could have filled any ambition musically. In many ways, its sad that such talent became hijacked by the twin demons of the 'space-rock' tag and Waters' megalomanic breakdown that shattered the band in the late 70's. The evidence for a wider talent is no more clearly heard than in this collection of songs, obscured by the shadows of the huge Meddle and DSOTM albums. As others have noted, the album picks up where side 1 of Meddle left off, with melodic, catchy, bucolic songs covering a range of styles but underpinned by top notch musicianship, particularly from Gilmour. There are so many strands of this album which are now woven into the patchwork of popular music in this century, from Ryan Adams to Chemical Brothers.
Whilst not following a 'theme' which became their byword after the gigantic (and career killing??) success of DSOTM, this collection stands up on its own merits and deserves a wider audience than just Floyd completists. Please give it a listen.
A True Floyd Album February 12, 2008 Hunter (Carmarthen) This Album is taken from the soundtrack to the film "La Vallee" but it really is an album in its own right. What it does gain from the film is the story that is told through the music, and you don't need to have seen the film to get that from the music. I can understand why this album has not had the acclaim and success of other Pink Floyd albums but it really does contain some of their best instumental pieces. Standout tracks are "Mudmen", a fully instrumental piece that is very atmospheric. "Stay", the best song lyrically on the album.
I have only given this album 4 stars because it is not one of the best of Pink Floyds albums, but saying that it would be tough to produce an absolute masterpiece every time and this album is well worth getting. You don't need to be a fan of Pink Floyd to enjoy this very moving, relaxing and beautiful piece of music. I would strongly recommend it.
an overlooked classic January 1, 2008 Mr. M. A. Reed (Somewhere, GB) Rarely performed live, and overshadowed by the release a few months later of "Dark Side Of The Moon", it contains some of the finest music they ever released. The first three songs are tense, powerful coiled instrumentals that they rarely explored, and "Free Four" is perhaps the most overlooked/under-rated song The Floyd ever released, being a requiem of a middle-aged man reminiscing from an imaginary future, topped off with some of the finest guitar work Gilmour was ever to make.
A much overlooked gem. May 23, 2007 Simon T. (UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Chances are, if you're a Floyd fan, and want to explore their back catalogue further than the 'big three' (Dark Side, WYWH and The Wall) this album will probably be the last one you consider buying. Which is a great shame, as there is some fantastic music on offer here, not least the superb Gilmour composition 'Childhoods End'.
Pink Floyd are legendary for their album concepts, the length of their songs, and how long it takes to record them. Interestingly, this album only took two weeks to record and features ten unrelated songs - none of which lasts over six minutes. This is the closest Floyd came to recording a 'standard' rock album. Also, pretty much every track here is a real joy from start to finish. If you're looking to explore Pink Floyd's catalogue further (and if you do, you're in for a real treat) I urge you to consider this album over any of their 60's or 80's & 90's output. You won't be disappointed.
Obscured By Clouds April 11, 2006 Ben Frost (England) 4 out of 13 found this review helpful
As others have said, this comes right before Dark Side as a great build up. This is the last album to contain any of those groovy Beatles like songs, because Dark Side was a more serious album. Obscured isn't the sort of album you have on at top volume where you sit right in front of the speakers, it's to have on in the car in the background whilst having a chat, becasue it's a 'soundtrack'. I'm not saying I have anything against this album, it's just that there's some far better stuff from the band out there. The only particular thing I hate about this album is that awful 'Absolutely Curtains' song. Does anyone know what it's supposed to represent? Obscured By Clouds isn't quite up there with Dark Side Of The Moon and Animals, but miles better than Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and The Final Cut. Four stars.
